Privacy, clinical safety and data retention

What we store

For an account: your email address (held by the authentication service), an optional display name, job title, institution and specialty. For a saved patient record: the profile fields you enter (such as name or local identifier, age, sex, department, ward and bed), the coded clinical features, laboratory and microbiology values and the result snapshot.

Where records are held

Records are written to your own device first so you can keep working offline. When you are online and signed in they are also stored in your BACTIF account so you can retrieve them later on another device. Records saved while signed out stay on that device only and are lost if the browser storage is cleared.

Your responsibilities

You remain the data controller for everything you enter. Ensure a lawful basis and appropriate consent, follow your institution's confidentiality, security and retention rules, protect any Excel or PDF export you download, and never enter military, defence or politically sensitive data.

Access control

Anonymous visitors can read published reference content only and can never write anything. A clinician can read, duplicate and delete only their own assessments. Content editors may prepare drafts and staged source updates but cannot publish. Only administrators can publish or deprecate clinical content and manage roles. These rules are enforced in the database itself, not only in the interface.

Audit logging

Content changes, role changes and rule executions are logged with the acting account and a coded summary. Audit records never contain patient identifiers and administrators see aggregate summaries only.

Retention

Saved records are kept until you delete them; deletion is immediate and permanent on the device and in your account. Audit records are retained for governance for 24 months. Deleting your account removes your profile and your records.

Clinical safety

BACTIF is educational decision support, not a medical device, and produces no autonomous diagnosis or prescription. Treatment content appears only where an approved, source-versioned recommendation record exists; otherwise BACTIF says so and points to official guidance and local protocol. Reference ranges are illustrative and laboratory-dependent.
